It was an early start to the day, up at 3:00 am so I could be at the airport by 4:30 am. Besides being 45 minutes delayed out of Miami, it was a pretty uneventful trip, made a little more pleasant given that on both legs of the journey, the middle seat was empty. Flying in to land at San Pedro Sula, I was reminded just how lush and green Honduras is. Granted, the rainy season is coming to an end, but all I could see for miles was greenery and what I suspect were plantain trees (plantains come from the banana family). I have come to tolerate plantains as they are a common addition to a meal here, but I can't pretend that I am a fan. They look very much like bananas but their taste is quite different and hard to describe.
I was met by Sandra from Casa el Meson B&B and as we exited the airport I was struck by the heat and humidity. 82 degrees...nice...although the last two days have seen very heavy rains. We chatted on route to pick up her three children from school, before heading to the B&B. The last time I stayed in San Pedro Sula was two years ago and I arrived by bus as it was getting dark. It was nice to see a little of the city in daylight this time. Mind you, not too much to see. Horses pulling carts are common place alongside heavy trucks and passenger vehicles. Young men and elderly woman walk up and down the lines of stopped cars at traffic lights selling bagged and peeled fruit (didn't ask what it was), car charges for phones, newspapers and a variety of other trinkets.
I was glad I decided to night stop here. With the delay out of Miami and the traffic it would have been impossible to catch the last bus at 3:00 p.m. for Copan Ruinas. Sandra told me that the road to Copan is the worst its been in 20 years. The rain has done a number on it and the lack of repairs has made it tough going. I guess I shall see for myself tomorrow.
Honduras has a national election on November 24th and a lot of people are hoping for a leader that will do something positive for Honduras and try to stem the widespread corruption that sadly exists here. I hope to learn more about that over the next couple of weeks.
No photos on this posts, sorry. It's early to bed to catch up on some sleep. So until tomorrow......
Glad you made it safely. May your bus ride tomorrow be just as uneventful.
ReplyDeleteJeff and I will be thinking of you.
Best, Ron
